Between 750,000 and 1.5 million bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas from March through October. They come out about 20 minutes before sunset and continue for an hour or more.
We viewed the bats from a grassy hillside, but the best place is from the bridge itself. To get this shot, I walked beneath the bridge, narrowly missing being hit by falling poop.
Peering through the trees, one can see a tour boat positioning in the exact location for best viewing. We tried to get a tour boat, but all were full. The bats return just before sunrise to their homes in crevices under the bridge.
